In my view, I find admin job monotonous and boring. No job satisfaction, no career advancement opportunity and no motivation to go to work every morning. I derive my motivation to wake up on the dot daily for work from my colleagues and bosses (I have got 3 bosses).
I am glad and I thank god for giving me wonderful colleagues and understanding bosses; Colleagues who are helpful, funky, jovial and generous, Bosses who are understanding, kind, liberal and willing to teach. They are part of the reason why I do not drag my feet to the office.

But why am I still grumbling here?

It is because admin job has got little feel of achievement as compared to the other desk bound jobs. I see my in-house lawyers working hard giving professional legal advice to the other 11 industries’ departments in the company, it’s so cool! I see my besties of various corporate departments (internal control, IT department and planning department) putting their heads together on how to improve the environment in the company making it a more conducive workplace and then implementing their plans; how I hope I could join them in the contribution to the company. I feel very puny as I can be easily replaced and am dispensable in my position; anyone can come in and take over what I am doing without any formal handover or memo.

Moving on to the salary part, I am absolutely contented with I am drawing now as an admin. Definitely a reasonable employee package with a cool basic salary, $120+ transport allowance monthly, $500 yearly dental benefits, 30 days MC fully claimable (below $50), 14days annual leave and 4 extra (company) holidays in December apart from the PHs. My aim is to earn a $40k salary per annum, but given my current position and qualification as a diploma holder, what kind of experience can I gain when I have been doing the same kind of admin work for a few years and how much more can I put in to be promoted to the executive level?

I don’t want to be a typical NATO (No Action Talk Only) Singaporean. Hence, I have been seeking and looking for opportunities to upgrade myself and at the same time, learn things from my bosses and lawyers to gain more knowledge and understand what Company Act and Contract Law are about. Learning is a never ending journey. I got to thank my GM and DGM for giving me the chance to go for my professional certification course next year which will cost $10k+ in total.
Although the HR has yet to approve my application for company’s sponsorship for this course totally, I believe I will get the chance to go for other types of courses which is below $5k in the year 2009. A new year that is beginning soon, and so a whole new attitude to go for what I want in my occupation and to start planning now!

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

Yesterday night, I watched a show on channel 8 at 20:00.
It was my third time watching this variety program, a heart wrenching one.
It never fails to make my eyes well up with tears and I kept trying to hold the tears in my eyes not wanting it to roll onto my cheeks.

Last night’s episode was about this family who met 2 misfortunes in a few yeas which turned their life upside down.

The mother fell down while cooking and hurt her spine when her daughter was only 2months old.
After her fall, she developed a phobia of walking and hence, she hasn’t been stepping on the concrete floor for 9 years. These 9 years, she lived her life sitting on her bed throughout the days.
The father was diagnosed with diabetes and had to amputate one of his legs.

From then on, they were drowned with debts; debts which include medical bills, house loan and such. Luckily, there were insurance and charity organizations to tide them through the difficult period. The father now sells newspaper by the roadside to earn their keep, and his 9 years old daughter helped with the daily household chores.
When the 2 hosts (权怡风 & 李铭顺) entered their house to survey on their living condition, they were greeted by a handful of old furniture and inches deep of dust and dirt. They also flipped through the school work of the 9 years old child and found potential in her studies. She scores well in her exams and did a good job in her homework. She didn’t have a proper study desk, her glasses is what my mother is now using (老花眼镜).

权怡风: 你的这些文具和书本是这么来的?
Girl: 有些买的,有些人家给的.
权怡风: 有没有想过要自己的书包,文具和玩具呢?
Girl: 不敢想.

Her 3 words slapped me awake! I am ashamed! There are people who don’t have their own books, toys and teddy bears and doesn’t yearn to have these material wants, yet I am thinking of what I want every other day. This 9 year old girl goes to school, takes care of her mother, clearing her mother’s waste everyday, help his father to sell newspaper as he has walking difficulties and cooks for the family. What was I doing when I was at her age?
I tell you, I don’t have the cheek to reply this question.

I promise myself I will lend a helping hand to people who are less fortunate and save the money on material wants. I have a new aim now; I want to be a volunteer worker!!!
